Tennessee Trasylol Lawyers
At Terry, Terry, and Stapleton, our legal practice focuses on obtaining compensation for injuries or deaths from dangerous or defective products. One such product is Trasylol, an injectable prescription drug which inhibits certain enzymes that increase the risk of bleeding during surgery and aids the body's ability to prevent bleeding. Normally, the drug is given to patients undergoing heart bypass surgery in order to control blood loss, but it also has been used in many types of orthopedic surgeries.
Unfortunately, Trasylol has been linked to an increased risk of death, kidney or renal failure, heart attacks, strokes and encephalopathy among heart surgery patients. There may have been approximately 22,000 deaths associated with the use of Trasylol. Due to the nature of the drug’s distribution, many people who were given Trasylol do not know they received it. In many cases, medical records need to be reviewed.
If you have undergone heart surgery and subsequently developed kidney or renal failure and are now undergoing dialysis treatments, or if you have had a loved one pass away under these circumstances, contact our Morristown Trasylol lawyers today at 1-800-518-3779 for help with your legal case. We represent clients throughout Tennessee, including Rogersville, Newport, Morristown, Knoxville, Kingsport, Johnson City, Jefferson City and Greeneville. You may be eligible to file a claim to recover compensation for your injury or the wrongful death of a family member and we can help.
History of Trasylol
Trasylol, also known by the generic name aprotinin, is manufactured by Bayer Pharmaceuticals Corporation. It was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1993 to reduce bleeding and the need for blood transfusion in patients undergoing heart surgery. Beginning in 2006, studies revealed that the use of Trasylol doubled the risk of kidney failure, increased the chance of heart attack or heart failure by 55%, and resulted in a 181% increase in the risk of stroke. In fact, the drug’s manufacturer conducted its own study that concluded Trasylol users had a 64% higher risk of death than those who took a similar alternative drug.
The FDA issued periodic warnings as they conducted ongoing safety reviews. When further research showed an apparent increased risk of death from Trasylol use, Bayer agreed to temporarily suspend marketing of the drug pending further review. In May 2008, the FDA announced that Trasylol would no longer be available for regular use in the United States.
Trasylol Lawsuits
The many lawsuits that have been filed commonly claim that Bayer is liable for manufacturing and failing to warn Trasylol users of its dangerous side effects. The suits allege that Bayer knew their drug increased patients’ risk of death, but failed to disclose this information to the FDA.
The lawsuits allege negligence in the marketing and selling Trasylol as a safe and effective drug for heart surgery patients. The plaintiffs typically allege the manufacturer:
- Failed to adequately warn patients of unreasonable and dangerous side effects.
- Failed to conduct adequate pre-clinical testing and post-marketing studies to determine the safety and side effects of Trasylol.
- Failed to use ordinary care in designing, testing, and manufacturing Trasylol.
